Game over for Twitter/X as Nintendo follows Microsoft and Sony in removing integration

What just happened? There was a time when a console came with Twitter (RIP) integration as a standard feature, allowing users to connect their accounts and share gameplay clips directly, among other things. Now, however, none of the three current-gen machines offer this support after the Switch became the last to abandon the platform.

Nintendo decided to end X support for the Switch on June 10 as part of the handheld's 18.1.0 update, meaning no more account linking or directly posting game content to Elon Musk's site.

Switch users can no longer select the 'Post to Twitter' option when sharing from the Album in the Nintendo Switch Home menu. The ability to link to X under 'Posting to Social Media' in the User Settings has also been removed. Specific integration for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that allowed players to post screenshots directly to X is gone, too.

Nintendo was the last of the three major console manufacturers to drop X integration. Microsoft did the same thing in April 2023 when it disabled clip-sharing from Xbox consoles and Windows PCs to the social media service.

In November last year, Sony followed Microsoft in dropping X integration from its PlayStation 5 and PS4 consoles.

While none of the three companies gave a reason as to why they dropped X integration, it's almost certainly related to the API tiers introduced soon after Elon Musk took over.

There are three API tiers, the highest level being 'Enterprise,' which offers commercial-level access for enterprise customers. It starts at $42,000 per month. Many developers who had been using the free API called the new free tier useless due to its limited post cap and functionality.

Family-friendly Nintendo held out quite a while longer than its rivals, but the final straw could have come last week when X formally started allowing users to post adult and graphic content on the platform as long as it met certain rules and conditions.

While X has never prevented people from posting adult material, users who post this content are now asked to put their images and videos behind a content warning.

Probably for the best, as these days it's an extremely racist and narcissistic platform. Before I deleted my account last year I'd held under this same username since 2006, any tweet I posted towards the end was just met with the most extreme backlash. I'm not even joking here when I say every tweet either offended someone over the most trivial of reason, or all replies either had a racist, religious or political angle.

This was from an account with tens of thousands of followers seeing my tweets about good coffee shops in the UK - The replies were completely irrelevant to what I was posting. What a shame it become the way it has and deserves all the failure it gets now.

Agree... the attack on Gaza was the line for me. No one, especially kids, should be able to accidentally happen upon a picture of piles of corpses or parents wailing as they carry the charred body parts of their children... or some of the grossest things ppl do on OnlyFans for popularity.

Elon wanted X to be the gutter, and it has.

Countdown until the Elon boot lickers come in and tell us how awesome he is... 3... 2... 1...
I couldn't give a damn about Musk or twitter or anything to do with them. I don't use those type of apps and never will. I also don't obsess over strangers and make it my life goal to hate on them.
Calm yourself down bud and focus all that hate energy into something productive, instead of focusing it on some stranger you've never met and probably never will. Anything else makes you sound just a little bit crazy.

The fact you think im not calm says everything we need to know about you.

Cool story bro, keep up the great work. Proof folks will strawman anything.

Oh and thanks for proving me right, right on time!!

Easy answer, game companies are super protectionist and will do anything to control the narrative around their products. Since Twitter is no longer an echo chamber, opinions that are not approved may hurt the game devs feewings, so integration has to go! THINK OF THE BRAND!

Don't worry, you can nurse your musk hate boner as long as you want. Everyone else knows you're an unstable crank already.

Why are your kids on Twitter? Maybe try parenting your kids, or stop following war journalists? It's not hard

"Guys everywhere I go everyone is using slurs? Why does this happen everywhere? "

Maybe you should look in a mirror?

I gotta laugh when I see the hate being spewed towards Musk/X nowadays... Like pre-Musk Twitter wasn't basically the sort of quagmire (except it skewed left) they're whining about now? Only difference being it was skewed in their favor so obviously it was 100% factual and utopian.

My question is why is this surprising to anyone. Game companies screw up CONSTANTLY.

Only happened to me on Twitter thank you very much. It’s still business as usual elsewhere on my other social media outlets with these type of comments being very few.

Sounds like you’d be right at home on X actually with your narrow minded generalised statements seeking attention.

I will tend to agree, however, before musk took it over, I terminated my account when I realized it was so full of liberal propaganda and they started picking sides. They could have stayed the course and walked the middle ground, but nope. They let the left and threats of Section 230 run their moderation side so it was time to leave. I've not gone back because as much as they have gotten close, they are not center. And most of the left took flight when they realized they too suffer the same moderation as the far right did. Jack screwed it up before musk, but look, people survived.

And absolutely nothing of value was lost. Only scammers, spammers and the media use X now, why would Nintendo want to pay money to associate itself with that?

But isn't it funny how people still troll X, even though they don't have accounts, on tech forums like this?

Hmm, Whoa, hold up. Seeking attention? And who's posting "Look look look what I did on super mario cart.." on X much less any forum? Now, whos seeking attention? Look, why doesn't Sony, Microcrap and Notendo just stick with their OWN forums? So, I think your "seeing attention" statement sends the wrong message.

I don't think you understand the difference. Here's something I would have typically posted to get "attention" as you put it:

"Did you know this new artisan coffee boutique just opened in London? I tried this amazing cappuccino at {insert place} - Full review of the store online below."

Vs the standard type of attention seeking reply:

"It's sick you condone cruelty to cows that are forced into producing the milk used in that coffee you're boasting about. People like you sicken me, swap to plant based milk. #stopanimalcruelty"

See the difference...?

X recently came out and said racist, mysogynistic, homophobic and pornographic posts were all allowed. fElon Musk is a vile and reprehensible criminal POS full stop. I hope I have outraged the right wing retards that lick the likes of his and Trump's boots.

Where are you pulling this nonsense out of? And why does everything boil down to politics? Twitter was always trash regardless of its owner. Before Musk bought it they at least TRIED to clean some of the racist and extreme content, but apparently that impedes free speech somehow. When Musk took over his first order of business was to fire all the content moderators and then let all the most extreme racists back on the platform. I guess by your definition having all these extremists back on there skews it in YOUR favor and somehow it's better now? Because, well FREE SPEECH!
