iPhone 16 Pro could feature the thinnest bezels on a smartphone yet

In brief: Apple is on track to deliver its biggest iPhone to date. In addition to what'll likely be a larger overall chassis, the Cupertino tech giant is also reportedly leveraging a new technology to squeeze even more usable space out of the phone's display.

Multiple sources claim Apple's iPhone 16 Pro models will ship with larger displays of 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, up from 6.1 inches on the current-gen iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. To get there, Apple is said to be using a technology called Border Reduction Structure (BRS) to help shrink the phone's bezel, resulting in more usable space.

An earlier report claimed Apple wanted to use BRS tech on previous iPhones but technology limitations in the form of excess heat buildup prevented them from doing so. Assuming they have ironed out all the bugs, we could see it debut on iPhone Pro models in just a few months.

Thin bezels on mobile devices certainly look stunning, but there's a bit of risk involved from a practicality standpoint. Having a touch-enabled display right against the edge of a phone where you hand wraps around to hold it is a recipe for unintentional taps. Perhaps Apple could mitigate this by reducing the input sensitivity around the outer edge of the display.

Apple typically introduces a new batch of iPhones in mid-September before launching them a week or so later, and there is no reason to expect anything different this time around.

A recent rumor suggests Apple is also working on a thinner version of the iPhone that could replace the Plus model, albeit at a higher price point than the Pro handsets. In line with the new iPad Pro which is Apple's thinnest device to date, the rumored iPhone could put Apple back on the path of focusing annually on increasingly thinner gadgets – something the company aimed to do for years but got away from in recent years.

I agree, even now I sometimes find myself with unresponsive display due to the way I hold the phone and my palm is touching the screen. Why do we need even thinner bezels??? Plus, why oh why do we need paper thin phones with a battery charge that will struggle to last a day?? I want a phone that lasts without a need for a battery bank!! I was so happy when John Ivy graciously decided to part ways with Apple, this guy was obsessed with thinnest, do I have to remind anyone the butterfly keys fiasco he created on Macbooks? Or the lack of ports?? Guy is an ***** completely cut off from reality and deaf to what users want. I thought Apple has learned its lesson, the M1 Macbook sure seemed like a step in the right direction.. now this! If there is one thing I care about is getting rid of the pill completely, then having the back flat with the camera so the phone can lay flat on a desk. If that means bigger battery to use the suddenly available space, well all the merrier ;-) Don’t make phones thinner and harder to hold in result ending with increased number of drops! We do not need that!

Another genius improvement from Apple. The bezels are in reality already small, so not sure if it’s meaningful to go to the extremes when there are obviously other improvements they can spend their time and resources on, instead of finding excuses year after year that so and so technology are not ready to use. My expectation is that Apple will do the usual upgrades, and so nothing to see. I recall in the early years of iPhone, it was so exciting to see what changes are they going to make. But it’s boring year on year.

Personally, I LIKE a little bezel, if for anything else, so when you are holding it you don't "touch" the screen. Also, might help in case it falls.

I would much rather they got rid of the island or notch than make the bezels smaller and phone thinner, in fact I wouldn't mind a thicker phone. I'm putting a case on it anyway so being thinner makes no difference to me. I wished Apple would actually listen to their customers, or potential customers.

Smart people don't care.
Thin is in
Not really. Smart people don't care about such silly, unimportant aspects of a phone. Smart people care more about durability and functionality rather than petty notions like ultra-thin bezels, especially considering that smart people by a protective case to put there phone into.

Wouldn't it be nice if phone makers produced devices that were durable and didn't break if you looked at them funny? Oh wait, some do and they DON'T have the Apple logo on them..

Tell me, am I the only one who can't tell the difference between the two phones?
